Need a dermatologist to answer!!!!?!?!?

Hi

I had pretty bad skin so my mom took me to see a dermatologist and he put me on Benza Clin which is a benzoyl peroxide gel. I%26#039;m 14 by the way. So I%26#039;m supposed to put in on twice a day but when i went to school it made my skin red and flaky and when the sun touched my skin it got all brown and weird so i started putting it on in only the night. My acne got better but there was still white heads like with no pus just white bumps...there were a few. Now summer has come and some of the acne is coming back. I am not sure when i should stop using this cream but the docter said only two months and its been around 2 3/4 months with the acne coming back. It might have something to do with the hot weather( i liv in norcal) and that i only used the cream at night, half as much as i was supposed to. PLEASE HELP ME! i dont wanna go back to the derm. yet! plz i%26#039;m going to highschool next year i%26#039;m really desperate! no sarcastic comments i really need advice. Thanks ahead of time!|||Not a dermatologist, but I have used nearly every acne medication out there. So, I will answer your question.

First, your acne will return whenever you stop using your medication -- probably for as long as you are in your teen years. Topical medications don%26#039;t %26quot;change%26quot; your skin; they only keep acne at bay as long as you continue using them (unfortunately). The only exception here is Accutane, which can provide long-term relief from acne for many.

BenzaClin (and almost all acne products, but especially those which contain benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics) do make your skin more sensitive to the sun. That%26#039;s a common side effect. You have to wear a sunscreen if you%26#039;re going to spend a lot of time in the sun. Benzoyl peroxide also makes many people%26#039;s skin red and irritated; some people cannot tolerate that side effect.

You need to incorporate an acne wash into your regimen; I would recommend SalAc. It%26#039;s not overly-irritating and does a good job of helping to control acne. It%26#039;s available on Amazon.com, Dermstore.com, and some other websites.

It would seem like the BenzaClin was working well for you; you just needed to use a sunscreen or sunblock when you were in the sun and also utilize and acne wash like SalAc into your regimen. However, if your acne is really bad and you don%26#039;t want to use BenzaClin (or another acne product for years to come), you may want to ask about Accutane. Using any topical acne medication or antibiotic only for a few months and then backing off will always result in the return of acne.

Good luck!
