Dermatologist appt. - moles?

i have my first dermatologist appointment ever in a week. as it nears, i%26#039;m getting more and more nervous. i%26#039;m going to have some moles checked out. i%26#039;m only 21 but i%26#039;m a bit of a worrier so i figure get them checked now just in case. anyways, my question is will the doctor remove them that same day and if so does it hurt. i have 3 or 4 that i want checked, would it be expensive to remove them all? and my final question is, should i be concerned that any of them actually are cancerous? they are raised, pretty uniform in color as well as shape but there%26#039;s one that just looks weird.

thanks|||I%26#039;m going to give you the advice that everyone gives me (cos I%26#039;m a bit of a worrier too ;-))) ... try hard not to worry until you know you have something to worry about (chances are super low - given your age %26amp; the description of the moles). Skin cancer is a serious thing, %26amp; you can%26#039;t take it lightly ... but you%26#039;re doing the exactly right %26amp; responsible thing - getting them checked.

My sister has some taken out of her back, because we both have to be really careful (our mum died of skin cancer, but she didn%26#039;t get them checked until it was WAY too late, %26amp; the mole that kicked it all off was huge ... about the size of a penny, %26amp; really raised). The doc anaethstatised the area, cut the moles out, put tiny stitches in, %26amp; put suture bandage on them. No biggie (%26amp; she is a big sooky about stuff like that - if she can cope, I%26#039;m totally sure you can).

I don%26#039;t know about expense at all. But whatever it is, its worth it. There is %26#039;cancerous%26#039; %26amp; then there%26#039;s %26#039;cancerous%26#039;. Benign is fine (remember that cos it rhymes). Malignant is what you need to be concerned with ... but it sounds as though you have NOTHING to worry about. As I said, wait until the test results come back. Will the doc remove the same day? If they think they need to, they will. But it will only be if they really think there is something sus going on. %26amp; then its only to make sure its not serious.

I go for a check every year. My doc has pics of my moles %26amp; can keep an eye on changes as the years pass.

Good luck ... I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ll be fine.|||If it%26#039;s got hairs growing form it, rejoice. It%26#039;s a mole.

Melanomas are serious, even more so if found late as they can spread through the body (even by the nerve system in severe cases I think, but don%26#039;t quote me on that bit), and the sooner found the better.

Sunbathing will naturally increase danger.

The doctor will not remove moles usually, and definitely won%26#039;t if it%26#039;s cancerous. Raised, uniform in colour isn%26#039;t much to go by, but if it%26#039;s irregular or growing, it could be a good idea to have it checked.|||I don%26#039;t think you should worry just yet. It is possible if any of them look abnormal the dermatologist will decide to remove it/them. It doesn%26#039;t hurt, they numb it first. I recently had two removed and the pathology reports both came back fine.

Best of luck.|||Chances are against you having anything to worry about, but you are doing the right thing seeing a dermatologist. Better safe then sorry. If they would remove them would depend on the Dr, how much concern there is with any of the moles and how much time the appt was set up for. There are a couple different ways to do biopsies, and remove moles, depending on the size. They use local anesthetic first so no it doesn%26#039;t hurt.

Also, were you planing on getting the moles removed? You didnt say. Some people do get moles removed just because they bother them.....usually raised ones... my sister got one on her face removed, I got one removed on my leg because it would get irritated...rubbed against the edge of shorts a lot. But if they set up a 15 minute appt they are not going to be doing that...too much time involved. Would most likely set up a longer appt for you to come back and do that
