Should i bother with the dermatologist?

i%26#039;ve suffered from hormonal acne since my mid teens (i%26#039;m 22) and my only other skin issue is occasional dryness. i was debating going to the dermatologist for help with the breakouts because i%26#039;ve never been and i%26#039;m sick of just dealing with it. i know birth control is very effective in treatment, but i%26#039;m not sexually active and would prefer to not take it, if at all possible. is there even any reason to visit the dermatologist? if birth control is my only option shouldn%26#039;t i just cut out the middle man and see a gynecologist? can a dermatologist even prescribe birth control? would i just be wasting money?

that%26#039;s a lot of questions, i know. thanks so much for the help!|||I undestand what ur going through. As a teen my skin was clear until I got older. I have or had adult cystic acne which is stess related/hormonal. It%26#039;s very embarassing. I%26#039;ve tried everything on the market even a dermatologist prescribing harsh treatments which had side effects and didn%26#039;t work. By chance I was getting a checkup by my family practioner and she asked if i had any other concerns. I asked how i could clear up my acne. She prescribed a drug called Aldactone or spironolactone. It%26#039;s main use is a potassium sparing diuretic and it blocks the testosterone hormone which causes acne. You just want to make sure you watch your potassium intake as too much potassium can cause dysrhythmias. And it may make you urinate alot. I haven%26#039;t had any side effects from it. What%26#039;s best is that it%26#039;s very inexpensive. I pay $4 for 30 pills at Wal-mart. It took a month of use to see results just taking 1 pill daily, a low dose which can be increased as needed by your physician of course. My face is now clear and i haven%26#039;t had a breakout since, especially a week before my period it would be the worse. The best is I haven%26#039;t had to change my diet and i just wash my face twice a day and use moisturizer of course. Also i now only take 1 pill every 2 to 3 days. If you don%26#039;t need birthcontrol then it%26#039;s not worth the healthrisk as the pill could be cancer causing.|||try it i%26#039;t might be the answer|||It would be better to go to the dermatologist to get the proper meds (prescription topical cremes)instead of getting birth control pills and wasting money on hormones you don%26#039;t need.

Birth control pills do not help with acne. That%26#039;s a myth. A dermatologist is better in that regard.|||Try these things first:

Mix baking soda and witch hazel/or water together until it comes to a good constancy, and then spread on your face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. these two things are very inexpensive and it%26#039;s very easy to do since there is only two ingredients.

Toothpaste is good for drying out your pimple (for some people). Put only a little bit before you go to sleep. Some people use this as a mask but DON鈥楾 EVER DO THIS! It can change your skin tone and make your face discolored.

Aloe vera helps scars lighten and less noticeable (lemon, cocoa butter, witch hazel, and tea tree oil do the same thing). Use the gel (of the aloe plant) or the real thing.

Try to buy a cleanser that works for you, and when you wash your face, open your pores with hot water (not too hot, or it will dry out your skin) and massage it gently into your skin. Then, use cold water at the end to close you pores. The smaller your pores are, the less likely you%26#039;re prone to pimples. Clearasil, Neutrogena, and proactive are good choices to start if you want a cleanser. Don%26#039;t use body soaps because they dry out your skin. Don%26#039;t scrub too hard either, because it can irritate your skin.

An egg yoke can be used to make you pores smaller. I used this when I had pimples. Just take the egg yolk (the yellow part) and leave it on your face for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with warm water and then splash your face with cold water.

Keep your hair out of your face because the oils in your hair could go into your pores. Change you sheets because they%26#039;re are trapped with dirt, oils, etc.

Zinc (type of vitamin) is the one of the best things you can use to get rid of pimples. You can buy these almost about any large store (such as Wal-Mart or Shaws.) Have one tablet per day and try to cut down the junk food and replace it with vegetables and fruits. Drink lots of water and don%26#039;t pop you acne. Popping acne can lead to acne scars.

If you have sensitive skin, don%26#039;t use make up. Some of the things in make up can clog your pores and cause pimples. Keep your hands out of your face as much as you can because you hands a full of bacteria and oils.|||yes, go to a dermatologist..... they can%26#039;t prescribe bc, and if your not sexual active i wouldnt go that way....

there are many many things a derm can try---- from dermabrasion to topical meds to oral med%26#039;s.....

find a good one and go, you wont be sorry.|||I am 27 and still get breakouts! The best thing I ever did was go to a dermatologist. If you dont want to I will tell you what he put me on and it work for you, hopefully as good as it helped me! Fist, buy the Neutrogena Acne kit! It comes with a face wash polich and a day cream and a night cream. Use it exactly as directed! 3 x a week, take an ice cube andrub it all over your face until melted. it closes up your pores and make any acne you have, smaller and less red. ( It works the way you would put ice on a swollen ankle!!!-) And buy cetaphil face wash ( all these things at your local drugstore) and use that every morning! It will make your face so soft! If dryness occurs, just buy a non comedegenic moisterizer and make sure all the make up products you use are noncomedegenic! It will say it right on the box. All Almay and neutrogena products are great and if you spend a little more- CLINIQUE make up is great!

Good Luck!

PS. ASking your DR for RETINA-A Mico .25 also is great- but I would only do that after you tried what I said!|||Dematologists are exspensive and most of time they can%26#039;t help. I recommend using Burts Bees Peach and Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub. Though I have only been using it for about a month now. My skin is the cleanest and clearest it has ever been. Its all natural and they don%26#039;t test on animals and after you use it I swear you face will feel amazingly clean. Keep with it every night and your skin should be clear fast. It is also rather inexspensive for the amazing work it does on your skin. If you don%26#039;t want to buy online. You can buy it at Target or Ulta. Good luck
