Plastic Surgeon Vs. Dermatologist for moles?

Hey, so my primary says I have to get my birthmark and another new mole that%26#039;s next to it removed because of how dark and large it the birthmark is and how the little one looks.although I%26#039;m only 23 and I doubt there%26#039;s anything wrong. My grandfather had skin cancer years ago but it was due to radiation. So...my doctor refers me to a plastic surgeon. Why would she do that and not refer me to a dermatologist? Will a plastic surgeon know if it looks suspicious or will they just remove it without biopsying it?

Ugh, I hate the thought of having them removed if unnecessary. I%26#039;ve already had three abdominal operations so you%26#039;d think this would sound like a cake walk but skin stuff creeps me out.|||I had a mole removed from my face and to do so I was reffered to a plastic surgeon because it was on my face. The doctor knew mine wasn%26#039;t cancerous. When I ad it removed the surgeon asked me if wanted a biopsy to see if there is any traces, but it would cost extra.I told her no it would be a wild goose chase because my doctor already looked at it and seen it wasn%26#039;t cancerous. If your doctor told you there may be something wrong with it,then it may be true.Maybe the arm pit is a sensitive place like the face, and that is why you have to go to the surgeon. The surgeon will know if it looks suspicious se will examine it like she did with me se said the same thing my doctor did that it wasn%26#039;t cancerous.Even if it doesn%26#039;t seem cancerous te surgeon will ask if you want it looked at just incase.|||Odds are a plastic surgeon will leave you with less scarring. If the birthmark is large a dermatologist might refer you to a plastic surgeon for its removal anyway. If your primary-care doctor already has determined that the mole and birthmark should be removed and you want a second opinion see a dermatologist (one that doesn%26#039;t just do cosmetic work like peels). You can always go to a plastic surgeon after that. But don%26#039;t put all this off. Melanoma is more likely in older people but it%26#039;s also found in younger people and you can reduce your risk by swiftly having suspicious moles taken care of.|||If your doc referred you to a plastic surgeon, he is probably worried about scars. I went through a similar situation. I needed to have a eye lid lift to improve my field of vision. My heavy eye-lids were obscuring it some. I could have gone to an ophthalmologist, many of them are licensed to perform this surgery in their offices. Uh-uh, not me, this is my FACE. I went to a plastic surgeon who is sensitive to minimizing visible scars, who understands facial tissue healing, etc. If your moles are not on a visible part of your body, ask your primary his reasons. GL.|||I would take the plastic surgeon over a dermatologist myself. I had a small mole removed a number of years ago by a dermatologist and have a huge scar. Truly wish I had seen a plastic surgeon to start.
